On September 24, 2019, Eczema Quebec hosted a Dermatology Nurse Training Workshop at the Glen Site of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). This half-day CNE-accredited workshop was led by Dr. Carolyn Jack, MD, PhD, Dermatologist and specialist in atopic dermatitis at MUHC, and by Isabelle Lavoie, a specialist nurse at CHU Sainte-Justine for 25 years, and holder of the post clinical nurse in dermatology for 11 years.
The event began with an introductory lecture to atopic dermatitis by Dr. Carolyn Jack. This was followed by reading and demonstrative videos on the topic of ‘How to reduce treatment failures in atopic dermatitis by providing therapeutic education,’ by Isabelle Lavoie. Finally, there was a discussion and Q&A period, along with demonstration session regarding cream quantity for body surface area application, washing techniques, patient feedback, and helpful video resources.
Objectives and outcomes
This event was approved for a maximum of 3 hours of accredited continuing nursing education by the Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Office, Ingram School of Nursing, McGill University. The objectives of this CNE-accredited workshop were to:
* Learn how to provide parents / patients with comprehensive, accurate and clear information about atopic dermatitis, its manifestations, its treatment and possible complications.
* Address and reduce fears and reluctance related to corticophobia
By the end of this workshop, participants gained the following knowledge:
* An increased understanding of atopic dermatitis disease, and principles of skin barrier repair
* Clear guidelines on treatment and management of atopic dermatitis
* Being better equipped to help educate patients / parents with atopic dermatitis
